We’re sitting down with Elle Onyx to discuss her career and talk about her new song “Majka”.
Majka is a chilled out electronic and house track. Listen to whilst driving, traveling internationally, or overthrowing the patriarchy.
Elle Onyx is an electronic music DJ and producer. Shortly after moving to London, she embraced the underground house scene and was inspired to start curating her own personal sound through emotive and energetic mixes. Now back in the USA she is bringing her taste for European house music to the thriving underground scene. Forever in pursuit of a good party and new music, Elle is still constantly traveling to discover the fresh sounds and party each city has to offer.
Introduce Yourself, how did you come by your stage / band / brand name?
I’m Elle Onyx, a DJ and producer from California. I started with Elle because, well that’s my name. And Onyx is a stone that is supposed to free you from your fears, leaving you to lead a fulfilling life. If you aren’t afraid of anything then you can do whatever you want.
When did you discover your love for music production and what made you realize you wanted to pursue a career as a DJ/Music producer? To what or whom do you accredit your sense of style?
My love for music production began very early on as I grew up playing musical instruments, so I always was musical and wanted to create. Then I started dating this awful DJ in college and he was really really shit at producing. I always had ideas for his tracks and he would dismiss me so
I just started making my own instead.
I’m inspired by so many different musicians it’s hard to pinpoint my weird style. Coldplay’s “Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends” album is still major inspiration for me. I also really like Grimes, Purity Ring, Yotto, so yeah, my musical inspiration is all over the place really.
How did you come up with the idea for your new song?
My new song was written on an airplane after visiting my mum, so I wanted to write something dedicated to her, that felt like you should be traveling while listening to it. It’s actually part of a two-track E.P. and the other track on there “In Love” was inspired by a Black Coffee set I listened to.
What are your plans for the near future?
This album has a B-side remix release that we would love to get out as soon as possible. I’m also in the studio tinkering away at a fuller album, one heavily inspired by trance and melodic techno.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank?
This, again, is dedicated to my mum, so I’d like to thank her.
How can fans find you?
What suggestions do you have for other artist like yourself?
Just be yourself no matter what. Other people’s opinions don’t pay your bills.
